The Hayward Area Recreation & Park District (H.A.R.D.) Foundation uses Bonterra Development + Digital as its primary CRM to track and communicate with donors and prospective donors. Prior to using Bonterra Development + Digital, the H.A.R.D. Foundation did not have a systematic way to track donors. In addition, the H.A.R.D. Foundation used a 3rd party email marketing tool to communicate with donors and prospects which proved to be inefficient. The product allows for easy tracking of donor activity and the email marketing tools allows us to better track the effectiveness of our communications.
  • Email marketing to donors and prospects with useful information regarding open and click rates.
  • Segmentation of donors and prospects.
  • The events module has proven to be very useful events large and small.
  • More flexibility in the development of sponsorship opportunities through the events module.
  • The auction function is very useful for silent and live auctions, but connectivity can be an issue. It would be helpful to be able to use the function off-line.
  • Adding a contact report form would be an excellent addition to the system and allow for better tracking of donor interactions.
I have used the Bonterra Development + Digital tool at 4 different organizations since 2016. I think Bonterra Development + Digital is an excellent tool for smaller non-profit organizations as well as those organizations that have not used a CRM in the past. Its functionality, ease of use, and excellent customer support make it an excellent tool for small non-profit organizations. Once an organization has more than 5,000 donors/prospects the tool becomes less effective primarily because of the inability to track contacts, integrate with desktop email systems such as Outlook.

We are a grassroots nonprofit social justice organization and we utilize Bonterra for email/newsletters, donor tracking, and financial reporting. Bonterra solves the problem of seeing actions taken by community members while also seeing giving history, how frequently they give, and the last time they gave. The scope of our use case is growing to target those who take action but don't give and those who give but don't take action.
  • User experience
  • Financial reporting
  • Targeted emails
  • Help desk
  • Event creation
  • Custom fields
  • Automated widgets
  • Editing custom fields
As a grassroots organization that employs 25 full time staff and has an annual operating budget of less than 3 million, Bonterra Development+Digital suites us nicely for the moment. There are moderate work arounds that we've had to implement to make it work for us that will make it harder to add the development package which is annoying.

I use EveryAction to send a monthly newsletter to our constituents, put together petitions, appeals, and mass emails, and track engagement. We have a large constituent database with around 150,000 active users. EveryAction allows us to effectively track and manage engagement, and quickly pull together emails as necessary. The template features are wonderful and allow us to put together email blasts in a very quick manner. We are also able to customize our branding and copy it onto each of our templates.
  • Email templates
  • Tracking engagement
  • Customer support
For the nature of our work, EveryAction is a great tool. We often have to put together emails and appeals with little turnaround time, and template features and the ability to copy paste emails are very helpful. It's also great to be able to track engagement among our constituents. For example, you can open up an individual's record and check what emails they receive from our organization, if they opened them, and the date that the email was read.

I use EveryAction as a fundraising management database. In it, I look up donor records, give history, update contribution information, create campaigns, create source codes, and direct response plans - just to name a few! I also use it to create acknowledgements for donors and track communications sent to donors.
  • Allow you to see previous and future communications for individual donors.
  • Easily lets you set up a direct mail appeal project with many segments - guaranteeing no duplicates.
  • Allows you to design emails easily with their "drag and drop" email creator. No HTML knowledge is needed!
  • Create a list can be difficult to use. It feels overly complicated.
  • Attributed gifts cannot be used for merge fields or for ask strings. It would be nice if Financial Household Contribution information also included attributed gifts.
  • Sometimes, I feel more knowledgeable about the database than the 1st point person in their customer service division.
I think EveryAction is a great tool for small nonprofits. It is not too challenging to learn, and many people in the organization can use it for a variety of fundraising uses - including direct mail appeals, targeted email appeals, major donor prospecting, cultivation, and solicitation - just to name a few. I don't think it would be good for a larger organization as it is not as powerful of a database as I have seen being used at large university fundraising programs.

EveryAction is our philanthropy software for our daughter database.
  • Analytical Report.
  • Gifts and payments.
  • Acknowledgements
  • Bulk uploads.
  • Long-term pledge payments.
  • Soft credit/attribution.
  • Dashboard options.
As United Way, we are unique, in that we collect pledges in a fiscal year, but the payments on those pledges are made in a calendar year. For example, the pledges are received in the fall. Beginning in January, payments on those pledges begin through December. So, the opposite of a fiscal year. It makes Viewing our actual dollars and pledges extremely difficult. We must run multiple reports every day to be able to see what I need to see on a daily basis.

EveryAction is used as our donor/donation database at Habitat Omaha. We track Events, Donors, Tax Information, and more. Reporting is a main component of our use with EveryAction, and the scheduled reports help us maximize our time and helps data analysis move along faster.
  • Scheduled Reporting.
  • List Segmentation.
  • Fundraising Projection/Analytics.
  • Bulk Uploading of Data.
  • Event Summaries & Contributions - I wish we could add more than one contribution to an event at a time; this ends up taking hours to apply for donations.
  • Volunteer Activity and Scheduling - there is currently not a robust Volunteer section to schedule and track.
  • Faith Tracking - a space for churches, pastors, etc. would be great so we don't have to use Custom Contact Fields.
  • Planned Giving - needs a tab in the 'View All Details" view, currently only in 'View Contact Record" mode.
  • Primary Contact - needs multiple options with labels. We have many contacts at the same place and Relationships don't always have the right option.
EveryAction is well-suited for reporting. The ability to Save and Schedule reports is unique and helpful. It has some work to do to be helpful with Volunteer scheduling and detailed Event planning.

Our Organization use EveryAction to engage and collect data for voters throughout our state. It helps us draw our universe and be able to collect data from interactions. And we can also send emails from EveryAction, which allows us to interact with people immediately. I have used it before at my previous job as well.
  • Generate Data
  • Easy access to files/data
  • has a way for people to sign up/donate
  • easy to navigate
  • Lower price for smaller organizations, its great but can be costly.
  • Sometimes customer support can be slow, especially when you ask questions around election season.
  • Nothing else really
I will recommend EveryAction a to any colleagues I inreract with in the community engagement space. Because the way their interface interacts with customers is smooth and efficient, and is a great tool to collect data while you are out interacting with potential voters. I do wish it was more affordable.

We use EA to track donors and prospective donors as well as large grants given. We also use it to track our organizing efforts and actionable items that staff does with support/hourly staff.
  • Reminder/to-do lists.
  • Reporting options.
  • Intuitive to use.
  • No training. I am just learning as I go.
  • Too many reports to streamline. Suppose you could narrow down the options.
The system is only as good as the employees enter details and if done correctly. Reporting is overwhelming to decide what to pull and when/how.

  • Donation Tracking
  • Member Management
  • Report generation
EveryAction is great for managing your donor database, tracking donor engagement, and managing memberships.
There are some functionalities I would like to see added, for example, the ability to run reports showing donors who have increased or decreased their giving in the past year.

We use it to track all contacts who reach out to us and specifically to keep track of our partners. Every time we are connected to a new person or organization we enter them with as much detail as possible.
  • Easy search
  • Lots of details
  • Good support
  • Would like more action buttons easily visible from each page
As mentioned we use it for very simple transactions and categorization of individual contributors and organizational partners. We’re able to track how they communicate with us through the bcc function which is great so that future users can catch up easily on what our interactions have been before

I use EveryAction to process donations received by Martha's Table and to create acknowledgment letters for donors. EveryAction makes it easy to create check batches, as well as to track individual donations. In addition, creating the same types of acknowledgment letters has made doing that aspect of the job very easy. It even provides the option to use the Excel download for reports if deemed necessary.
  • Acknowledgement letters
  • Keeping track of donations
  • Allowing changes to be made to donations if necessary, even after a couple of days (our old system was very difficult to make changes to a donation record)
  • Allows for direct attachment of any electronic documents to the donor profile
  • Credit card donations don't always deposit at once, making it hard to decipher which credit card batch was deposited on which date.
  • There's no easy aspect of creating tribute letters outside of an Excel format spreadsheet. Even then, aspects required tend to be missing.
It's very helpful for keeping track of donations with each donor. Acknowledgements tend to be done much easier with this program. Daily reports are pulled with ease, as well as reports allowing me to find duplicate donor profiles. In addition, I'm able to use this program to better keep track of those who pledged donations to us vs who paid those pledges.

Tribute letters are a bit less reliable with this program.

Most of the organizations in which I've used EveryAction - or which I've supported with EveryAction setup & use - try to make it the solution for all of their online organizing needs. There are very few mobilizing functionalities it doesn't claim to offer (most notably, peer-to-peer texting). That can be really convenient for organizations that are trying to do outreach on a lot of different levels, and recognize the need to have all that data live together in one place. But I've also noticed that the scale of what EveryAction offers can make it overwhelming for less technical staff, and especially volunteers. I have found it suits organizations best that absolutely need bulk email, digital fundraising, phone banking, event management, broadcast texting, online advocacy, action tracking, reporting, and a bunch more functionality all in the same tool because they have no other options.
  • Some people find the Create A List tool more intuitive than other record-querying equivalents, which can make it easier for digital organizers to target and segment bulk emails, broadcast texts, door-knocking sheets, etc.
  • The ability to add custom fields on both Contact and Contribution records allows for some flexibility in making the system adapt to your organizing model
  • There aren't a lot of other tools out there that make phone banking quite as accessible
  • EveryAction's Email Series/Automations allow for some pretty sophisticated things to run mostly on their own, from welcome and reactivation series, to drip campaigns
  • For the most technical EveryAction users, the ability to customize online form appearance and functionality using callback functions allows for pretty intricate customization of submitter experiences (e.g. redirecting form submitters to different destinations based on how they filled out the form)
  • The most common frustration and complaint I've experienced has been about support. Issues can sometimes drag on for months, they have given false or misleading information, data has been lost during migrations, and perhaps the worst is that they have been caught trying to avoid responsibility. But on some level these might just be symptoms of a larger problem. The tool is too big, trying to do too much. That means we customers get overwhelmed and need to ask for support more often, and that their support staff may actually be less familiar with some details of the tool than we are. And it doesn't help the situation that they seem to have pretty rapid staff turnover.
  • In the theme of EveryAction trying to do too much, many of the pages - from records to admin menus - are just overwhelming. There are too many sections and subsections. When to get to know each one, it makes sense why it's there and why it's important. But the combination of all the different pieces makes it a very difficult tool to onboard volunteers less comfortable with technology. If your grassroots fundraising program relies on a bunch of retired volunteers, it will be a challenge to get them to use EveryAction.
  • Generally speaking, it seems as though there's more emphasis on marketing and sales than support. There is some ability to pick and choose just the pieces you need and not pay for pieces you don't. But everything is expensive, there is a lot of emphasis placed on upselling you, and there are hidden costs. Up until not too long ago, there was no way to bulk delete records, and when you'd ask support for help doing so, they'd bill you with a data services charge. They offer migration support for a cost, but in all the migrations I've seen and heard about, they aren't very helpful because they spend more time explaining what can't be done without even more costly support than trying to understand your unique organizing and data needs. And if you have a data warehouse and want to get your data dumped in there, the prices can get very high very quickly.
  • On the more technical side, EveryAction's APIs are useful, but I feel they get developed and managed so haphazardly that it's hard to plan around them. The API credentials you get have selective permissions to the endpoints you'd need in a way that's completely opaque. For instance, loading values to Custom Contact fields is a relatively straightforward part of updating a Contact record, but if Custom Contribution fields require a completely different process, involving automated bulk imports, from updating Contribution records. Bulk imports don't allow for other, more standard Contribution updates and you have to ask to get an API key type has access to the bulk import endpoint, even if you already have access to Contribution endpoints. Their documentation is decent when it comes to using the endpoints, but doesn't reflect operational obstacles like this. I've found and heard that more time is spent working with support than actually writing code when developing using their APIs.
  • Reports can be very helpful, but despite what EveryAction folks claim, in my experience, they're just not quite as customizable as we need. Especially when it comes to connecting people to one another, or understanding donors AND their donations, it seems the only options are to export data and process it externally, whether that means someone's doing a whole lot of work in Google Sheets, or you have tech capacity for data visualization, but still have to pay a lot for the data dump.
At this point, I can only in good conscience recommend EveryAction to organizations that really do require something close to the wide array of functionalities that EveryAction offers, and have no other way to put all their organizing data together in one place. There aren't a lot of alternatives out there that offer even a decent fraction of what EveryAction offers, and it can be incredibly important to have one place to see everything about your supporters - we need to know which of our event attendees are also major donors when doing follow up, for instance! But the problem is that other tools out there are better than EveryAction at one or a few of the functions it offers. And they also might be easier to adopt because they're focused on a much narrower range of things. So if you don't need most of the tools built in to EveryAction, or if you have another way to bring all your data together, I suggest you make sure you do plenty of due diligence on alternatives (which might be a bunch of different tools) before committing to EveryAction.

We use EveryAction to manage a 90,000 member database (CRM), including tracking donations, campaign participation, member interests, contact information, and email program. We have both staff and volunteers managing the database.
  • Expansive member profile options, that are easy to customize.
  • Solid list segmentation options, if a bit clunky in execution.
  • Processes donations easily.
  • Customer service is pretty bad - often unresponsive, a lot of passing off to other members of staff, general lack of knowledge about the product, etc. Their employees seem like they hate working there.
  • Unless you have a dedicated staff member to manage profiles, get rid of dupes, etc, it becomes unwieldy quickly.
  • Action Network has better UX and tools (petitions, letters to lawmakers, etc) at cheaper prices.
It's a tool that is a bit too big and expensive for small organizations, and offers little in the way of customer support/service. So, unless you can afford a dedicated database manager, it would be difficult for me to recommend this tool. If you can, its very powerful and may be a good fit,

EveryAction was the most comprehensive solution we could fine to automate interactions and followups and maintain a close relationship with our supporters. The platform is, honestly, incredible with just about anything you could think of. The problem is not the platform, in my opinion it's the company who owns it, Bonterra. They present themselves as a company that supports those who 'do good', along with slogans that ring the SJW bell. The company owns CyberGrants, EveryAction, Network for Good, and Social Solutions. We setup our account and the sales rep offered free on-boarding, training, and so we began configuring it for our org. We waited for the on-boarding team to reach out, but no one did. I finally reached out after the 2nd month to be informed that they were so backed up the training would not begin for several months and to read their docs! We moved forward, setup the system as needed and began learning all the nuances of it.. it's quite complex. Then, we received a bill... during our 'free' 90 days on-boarding. They refunded it but at this point, we did not see the support needed to continue and cancelled based on their breach of agreement by charging us w/o auth. Their legal department sent a cancellation doc for us to sign which legally barred us from writing reviews, etc!! We declined and asked them to edit the agreement, which they would not. We did NOT sign it and they would not provide any further confirmation the account was cancelled other than an email. Is that really supporting those that do go, or just chasing the buck and trying to gag those that have negative experiences!?
  • Campaign Automation
  • Integrations
  • Drip Campaigns
  • CRM
  • Unauthorized Charges to Customers
  • Requiring clients who cancel to sign a legally binding gag agreement
  • Poor on-boarding and training process
EveryAction is well suited to an organization who can overlook the overselling, under-delivering that ensues after the sales rep gives you enough 'free' addons to sign a contract... to then not provide those add-ons (on-boarding, training, support). Have a legal department ready to review ALL contracts they want you to sign. From my experience, If you cancel, for any reason even if they breach the contract, I belived they will try to get you to sign an agreement legally binding you from making negative reviews, comments, etc.! Makes you wonder how many review 'stars' they would actually have if the negative experiences were allowed to be posted. Paying over $3500/year for this kind of experience would be disastrous for most businesses in my opinion.

The Children's Agenda uses EveryAction to: Manage and send e-newsletters and other mass email communications Send action alerts to supporters to send letters and sign petitions to elected officials Track donors and donation
  • Designing and sending e-newsletters is quick and easy.
  • The automation of letter campaigns only going to constituents and their respective representatives makes our advocacy more effective.
  • Being able to save searches means that when we send emails we know, with only the click of a button, that they are going to the most updated list of our supporters.
  • Being able to build audience lists by adding in and taking out one step at a time lets us target our communications more effectively.
  • It would be nice to have a way to create shorter and "more friendly" URLs for our links rather than using the auto-generated ones. They are too complex for putting on print communications or graphics that aren't clickable for people to type the URL into their browser. They are also too long for twitter posts. To avoid this, we post the link onto our website where we can create a short URL with words that are easy to remember and type. That added step takes time we could use better in other ways.
EveryAction is ideal for any advocacy group that is organizing the public to engage with their elected officials on issues. We primarily use it to send out Action Alerts calling on supporters to sign letters and petitions. From advocating with the local school board for more investment in mental health supports for students to advocating with the Governor to enact into law legislation to reduce child poverty -- EveryAction is a vital tool in our advocacy for public policies and public funding that support the well-being of children.

I use EveryAction with several clients to set up fundraising and advocacy emails, to monitor donations over time, in conjunction with lead-generation, donor acquisition, and donor retargeting ad campaigns, and other tasks. I also use VAN for electoral and membership management purposes with a client, including events and integrations with other platforms like Hustle, Mobilize, Mobile Commons, and Impactive. In addition, I support other users with finding the features they need.<br>
  • Email Marketing
  • Membership Reporting
  • Fundraising
  • Event Management
  • Integration with ActionNetwork
  • Advocacy Page Setup
EveryAction works really well for email marketing for campaigns and nonprofits. Its connection to VAN makes it a vital tool for election work whether by nonprofits or campaigns.
I have occasionally found its event management cumbersome to work with. It's also challenging to onboard new organizing staff to using VAN and EveryAction for their campaigns -- a steep learning curve.

We create specific lists to send emails to donors and community members internationally, depending on their relation to the organization. We also create forms for fundraising for our annual fundraisers as well as one-off fundraisers. We use every action online action to create action alerts (petitions) to drive forward our campaigns. Once we establish a more grassroots team we plan on using volunteer and event features as well.

EveryAction is good for smaller nonprofits with at least 1,000 supporters, (not sure if worth it for smaller ones because of $$) and nonprofits with tens of thousands of supporters. I’ve worked with EveryAction at three different organizations ranging from 2,000 contacts in the CRM to 100,000. If you’re just looking for a donation platform, EveryAction may be too much, but if you’re also sending emails and targeting multiple areas, it’s great.

EveryAction (EA) is our digital CRM. We use it to send action and appeal emails to our donors and supporters. EA has provided us with greater flexibility and speed in producing and disseminating our messages to our audience than our former CRM. I use EA to track donations, look up supporter contact information, and view reports.
  • Templates for email queries.
  • Custom fields for greater tracking detail
  • Better user interfaces for work activities.
  • Better strategies and solutions for sustainer migrations. Losing 10% of your organization's monthly donors is a big revenue loss.
  • Ability to easily use more payment processors than Paragon.
The onboarding and support team are first class. Very patient and helpful with all of the onboarding process and genuinely interested in making our organization's experience with EA and fundraising successful. Ease of use in sending email communications to our donors and supporters. Reporting functions are well thought out and helpful in tracking revenue and donors.

EveryAction has been a very integral tool in managing our constituent data. The ability to tag our community members using activist codes, identify people based on the type of event where we met, and the ability to measure levels of engagement help move the work forward. EA allows me as a user to quickly identify who I should be talking to when there are pertinent matters at hand.
  • Data management.
  • Event management.
  • Documentation.
  • Data health checks.
  • Clear pathways to adjust and correct data.
  • Engagement management.
Being a C3/C4 the ability to switch from EA to the voter file is integral to the success of our organization. EA allows us to load our base and automatically tags those individuals that are registered to vote into the voter file. Virtual phonebanks also create a space that makes it easy to activate new volunteers without creating a complicated profile.

We use EveryAction to manage volunteer recruitment, advocacy actions, fundraising, and primary CRM. It is helpful to have one system for managing supporters that integrates advocacy, volunteer work, and fundraising. We will launch petitions or advocacy tools to provide supporters with a way to take action. Staff and volunteer leads can then measure and evaluate progress toward goals. With the integration of Development and Email/text communication, we are able to shape communication and fundraising asks based on the engagement of supporters in the work.
  • Volunteer management
  • Fundraising integration & tools
  • Online action tools for advocacy (federal and state are strongest)
  • Emails to dynamic lists
  • Automation functions are good
  • Fundraising intelligence features are good
  • Local advocacy, school board advocacy
  • Better design templates for online action pages. You should be able to change the look and feel more easily without coding… or they should help customers with this
  • Clearer communication about available features and costs.
  • Better pricing for smaller groups- they are expensive
  • More support for onboarding and helping groups use the system most effectively (like setting up codes, revenue streams, reporting, etc) lots of groups underutilize it because of how sophisticated it can be.
When we have had to rapidly deploy advocacy actions and measure progress forward specific goals it has been great. The ability to integrate email and fundraising to support that work is also great. Making it easy for staff and volunteers to follow up and engage people works well too. The biggest challenge has been weak support for local advocacy. School boards and some local data aren’t available, and custom targets aren’t sufficient when trying to support statewide work. It might be okay on a county-by-county basis but still, the lack of school board data is a problem. The other challenge is the out of the box tools don’t look great unless you embed them with code on your current website. Depending on what that is it might be a challenge. We use WordPress and regularly embed actions and forms and it works well. I previously had a problem embedding them in Wix and square space because it would strip codes that help us track information.

I use EveryAction daily to support political campaigns' fundraising programs. This tool allows me to create specific target audiences, understand our email list, and conduct tests to ensure we're constantly evolving and achieving our fundraising goals.
  • Target audiences.
  • Reporting.
  • Ease of email coding.
  • Customer service and flexibility.
  • Confusing user interface/UX.
  • Engagement metrics aren't standardized.
EveryAction is suitable for smaller programs where email volume is not extremely high. For programs that require lots of specialized reporting, coding, and branding, this would probably not be the best choice.

EveryAction is at the core of our fundraising operation - CRM, donor records, gift records, gift planning, etc. We use the data we get from EveryAction to help us plan our donor visits and the next steps for each donor. I'm grateful for the reporting process, though it takes getting used to, it gives us more than we need to report out to our stakeholders, board members, and management.
  • Reporting results
  • Data collection on each donor/record
  • Prioritizing follow up steps with donors
  • I find the reporting process for gifts to be a little more cumbersome than expected, but once figured out, it works
EveryAction is well suited for any sized operation - the controls, tools, and ability to see the work of colleagues are really helpful. It makes being able to check in with colleagues simpler. Setting up the report formats you like is a little more cumbersome than I expected, but it will eventually work itself out as I get more and more accustomed to the way EveryAction works.
